Tim Gutowski

About Tim

I’ve been working in online technology for more than 25 years, and I came to it as a writer. As a journalism major at the University of Illinois, I started on the editorial side, running online coverage for sports properties — and kept gravitating toward the technical staff, helping figure out solutions alongside the developers. Eventually I made it official: while working full-time I earned a Masters in Computer Science at the University of Chicago and switched careers for good.

Since then I’ve built site features for cars.com, managed the University of Chicago’s central web presence, and spent nearly two decades at a Chicago design and development agency, where I rose from web developer to Director of Development — overseeing planning, budgets, and production of websites and custom applications for political campaigns, unions, and nonprofits.

Today I work independently — consulting for organizations directly, and providing senior white-label development for agencies I’ve partnered with for years. I still bring a writer’s sensibility to technical work: I want to know why something works, not just how — and I can explain it to your board as clearly as to your developers.
